The 4 stages

Your cycle isn’t just about bleeding once a month — it’s a powerful rhythm that affects your energy, mood, and needs throughout the month. When you learn to work with it — through nourishing foods and supportive activities — you feel more balanced and in tune with your body.

Menstruation phase (days 1-7)

This is what we usually call “having your period.” It’s when your body sheds the lining of the uterus (that cozy little blanket it made in case a baby was coming). 

No baby? Out it goes. Bleeding can last anywhere from 3 to 7 days, and it’s totally normal to feel cramps or low energy during this time.

Tips: Iron-rich foods like leafy greens, red meat, beans, or lentils to replenish lost iron. 

Rest as much as you can — now’s the time to listen to your body. Gentle stretching or restorative yoga can also be helpful with cramps.

Follicular phase (days 1-13)

This one overlaps with your period at first.

 While your uterus is cleaning, your ovaries are busy prepping for next month’s guest star: an egg! 

Hormones such as follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) stimulates the ovaries to grow follicles, each carrying an immature egg. In this phase, eostrogen starts to rise, which can boost your energy, mood and creativity.

Tips: Eat fresh veggies and fruits to support healthy estrogen levels. Consume lean proteins (chicken, fish, eggs) to help your body rebuild after your period.

Ovulation Phase (~14 days)

Ovulation is like the main event. Around two weeks before your next period, the mature egg is released from the ovary and travels down the fallopian tube. This is when you’re most likely to get pregnant. Some people feel a tiny twinge or slight pain when they ovulate — totally normal!

Tips: During this phase you are at most confident, so go out with friends, connect with your partner

Engage in high-intensity workouts— you are at your strongest during this phase.

Luteal Phase (day 15-28)

After ovulation, your body goes into waiting mode. The spot where the egg popped out (called the corpus luteum) starts making progesterone, which keeps the uterus lining thick and cozy — just in case the egg gets fertilized. If it doesn’t, hormone levels drop, the lining breaks down, and… hello again, period!
